Build. Organise. Lead.

Restore courage to public life.

Australia does not suffer from a shortage of commentary. It suffers from weak leadership, organised ideological opposition, and a political class too willing to manage decline instead of defeat it. The Sir Bertram Stevens Institute exists to restore courage, conviction, and leadership to Australian public life.

Our task

Not to comment on decline, but to reverse it — to build the case, rally public support, and form the leaders needed to turn the country around.

Our Mission

To reject and reverse the managed decline of Australia.

Too much of our politics now asks Australians to accept less: lower expectations, weaker leadership and less ambition for the future. We believe Australia deserves better.

Free societies do not preserve themselves. They require conviction, leadership, and a willingness to defend the inheritance that sustains them. Australia has too often lost confidence in that task. We were founded in the belief that such confidence can be restored.

We believe New South Wales can again produce public leaders with courage, conviction and leadership.

We believe in the institutions of a free society: parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, free enterprise, individual liberties, family, and national cohesion.

These are not relics to be apologised for. They are achievements to be defended, strengthened, and handed on to the next generation.

Our mission is to strengthen the intellectual and moral foundations of public life — to renew conservative leadership, elevate the standard of public debate, and form Australians capable of serious, principled service. That is the task before us, and we intend to meet it.

“We exist to rebuild Australian public life on courage, conviction and leadership.”

Sir Bertram Stevens Institute · Mission Statement

What we do

Three disciplines. One mission.

01

Build the Answer

We turn diagnosis into policy that can be argued, adopted, and implemented. We do not produce decorative papers for think-tank shelves — we produce answers for a nation that needs its institutions stronger and its government more competent.

02

Organise the Majority

Good ideas win because people are organised to fight for them. We campaign to rally mainstream Australians who know the country is drifting, and push back against the well-organised, well-funded hard-left.

03

Forge the Leaders

Australia will be restored by men and women of substance: people with judgement, courage, discipline, and endurance. We identify, train, and back the next generation of leaders with the courage to act.

Not nostalgia. A standard.

We look to Sir Bertram Stevens not as a relic, but as an example.

A person of conviction, devoted to public duty, who tenaciously fought for what he believed in. We are not here to preserve old ideas in amber — we are here to recover what is worth carrying forward and put it to work in the fights of the present.

We want to revive a public life in which duty means something, integrity is expected, institutions are respected, and courage is admired rather than punished.

Leadership

We forge leaders who can think clearly, speak boldly, organise, and act.

Australia’s political system rewards marketability over conviction, compliance over courage, and polished performance over substance. We exist to give people of capacity the training, discipline, and confidence to carry responsibility well.

01Think clearly. Cut through slogans, groupthink, and managerial fog. Ground public argument in fact, principle, and judgement.

02Speak persuasively. Make the case with force and clarity. Turn conviction into argument, and argument into influence.

03Act with conviction. Lead when it matters. Organise others, carry responsibility, and stand your ground when the easy path is silence.
